To Be Or Not To Be Gluten Free?

To be or not to be gluten free

You may have noticed going gluten-free is the new craze. It seems as though everybody these days is on a gluten-free diet and almost everyone you know has self-diagnosed as having gluten intolerance.

Going gluten-free seems to be the cure to almost every health problem. Many people might feel better, experience less digestive distress by giving up gluten containing foods, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that gluten was causing those problems.

Let me help you by setting the record straight, there are three types of people who may not be able to eat products containing gluten: people with celiac disease, people with gluten sensitivity or intolerance and people with wheat allergy. (source: Health Day)

So if you are on a gluten-free diet make sure your diet contains foods that are naturally gluten free, whole foods such as fruits, vegetables, beans, nuts, fish and poultry. Often gluten-free foods are another name for “designer treats”, higher in fat and calories. Gluten-free foods are not always nutritious; many gluten-free packaged foods are highly processed and are best to be avoided.

If you suspect you are gluten intolerant and suffer from gas, bloating and abdominal pain you may have a food intolerance or sensitivity to something other than gluten; that’s because our diet can comprise up to as much as 500 different foods and additives so it’s almost impossible to know exactly what you are sensitive to without working with a Registered Dietitian who specializes in food sensitivities and intolerances.
