How to Get Your Kids Active

One of the hardest things for us parents to do is allocate workout time on top of having to manage the one million activities our little ones are a part of. While it is important that you find time to get active, it is just as important that your kids do too. Simple solution? Get active together! Here are just a few ways to encourage fitness with your kids.

  1. Hang out in the backyard

Play a game of tag, hide-and-go-seek, or some basketball. Maybe even have a competition of who can jump rope the longest or get everyone involved together by playing double dutch. Buy some hoola-hoops and the fun will never end!

  1. Go for a walk

Grab your kids and take them on a walk around your neighborhood with your dog. If you have very little ones, strap them into a stroller and take them for a light jog. This is a perfect way to expend their energy after a day of daycare or school.

  1. Go to the park

Even if there’s not a park in walking distance to where you live, drive to one and spend the afternoon playing. Push your child on the swing to work your arms, or if they’re busy sliding down the slide over and over again, run around the parameter of the park. This way, both you and your little one are getting some exercise.

  1. Play active video games

I’m sure none of us are strangers to the older child who refuses to back away from the television screen. While it is important to limit screen time, sometimes we need to choose the no-temper-tantrum route and let them do their thing – just make sure the game is something that pushes them to move. Look into Xbox 360 or Wii Fit games, and rest assured that they are being active while their eyes are glued to the screen.
