6 Ways to Eat Less Sodium
Most of you know too much sodium in your diet can cause swelling, high blood pressure and other health problems.
The dietary guidelines for Americans 2010 recommends adults consume no more than 2300 milligrams of sodium per day, but those with heart problems should consume no more than 1500 milligrams per day. However, the typical American consumes a whopping 3400 milligrams per day.
Something interesting to note is that sandwich eaters eat more sodium per day than non-sandwich eaters.
Check out these tips:
- Watch the extras. Many sandwich shops offer the extras, chips and pickle spears. Eating the chips and the pickle with your Sammy can add an extra 400 or more milligrams of sodium.
- Skip the cheese. Cheese can increase the sodium by as much as 170-400 milligrams.
- Pass on the salami, bologna and ham. These lunchmeats can be higher than other lunchmeats adding an additional 400 milligrams of sodium per serving.
- If you like peanut butter sandwiches, choose natural nut butters with no added salt.
- Tuna lover? Rinse and drain before using and cut the sodium by as much as 40%.
- Like turkey meat? Look for lower sodium options. Choose low sodium, nitrite and nitrate free brands.
